Frequently Asked Questions
What is editing?
That's a tough one to answer, because editing includes a wide range of activities. Let's just say that an editor helps you to polish and perfect your writing.
Will you write my essay for me?
Absolutely not. We do not produce student essays.
Can I email you my work as an attachment?
Definitely. We can either print the file and work on paper, or we can work from the electronic file and e-mail it back to you, whatever is most convenient for you. If you want your work corrected electronically using "track changes," we can oblige you.
If I use an editor, am I guaranteed to get the job / get published / successfully defend my thesis?
The short answer is that there are no guarantees of success. We can never know precisely what your employer / publisher / thesis examination committee is looking for. All we can do is to assure you of the best possible product using what you have given us.
How do I know if I need an editor? And how do I know what type of editing I need?
Most people benefit from having someone else read their documents. We all make mistakes. After we look at your particular project, however, we can tell you how much and what type of editing you need. For information on types of editing, go to the Services page.
Thompson Editing is based in Toronto. What if I live somewhere else?
This is not a problem. We can communicate by e-mail or by phone. Material can be sent electronically, by mail, or by courier. In this era of global business, it doesn't really matter where we are based.
